THE BITS AND PIECES OF SHREDDERS

All paper shredders cut paper into bits and pieces of paper . Here is a quick introduction to different types of shredders.

TYPE OF CUTS


Strip Cut	Cross Cut

Strip cut paper shredders make a long, narrow piece of paper . It is usually just as long as the paper you put into the shredder, but the width can vary from model to model. Think of spaghetti.

Cross cut paper shredders takes a paper and cut it into very short and narrow pieces. Think of confetti.

Strip cut paper shredders usually handle more sheets per pass. Cross cut paper shredders offer increased security (because the shred is much smaller), but they don't shred as many sheets at the same time.

There is a variation of the cross cut shredder called a Particle Cut. The difference is that the length of the shred varies from about 1 ½" to 3" -- depending on how many sheets are fed into the shredder at the same time. The more paper that is fed into the paper shredder at one time, the longer the shred . (The width remains the same).

Dahle's biggest shredders do not produce particle cuts. Dahle's hopper and conveyor shredders create shred size in a cross cut 1/8" x 3 1/8".

SECURITY LEVELS

Shred size is classified by a "Security Level" number between 1 and 5. Level 5 is the most secure, espionage-safe shredded paper size demanded by the military or government departments. Level 1 is for general use.

Dahle makes shredders with security levels between 2 and 5. (Level 1 is such a wide cut to make it relatively useless for protection of data.)

Security Level 2 Shredders	( Strip cut Shredder : 1/8" or ¼") For internal documents such as notes, invoices, photocopies and more.
Security Level 3 Shredders	( Cross cut Shredder : 1/8 x 1 3/16" or 1/8" x 7/8" or ½" x 1 1/8" or 1/8" x 3 1/8") For confidential documents such as company internal documents, personal data.
Security Level 4 Shredders	( Cross cut Shredder : 1/12" x 9/16" / 1/12" x 7/16") For secret documents such as documents and files for the safeguarding of one's livelihood or a company's existence.
Security Level 5 Shredders	( Cross cut Shredder : 1/32" x 7/16") Espionage-safe or extremely high demands of security as in military or government departments. Dahle shredders in this category are all NSA / DoD approved.
